UjENA Glossary

ADJUSTABLE – Used to describe the options to increase or decrease the fit on the body with ties or sides.                    
BANDED – A collection of styles featuring a separate band on the top or bottom of a suit.                        
BIAS EDGE - An additional piece of fabric trimming a raw edge.  It serves as an accent and is a quality way of offering an edge.                  
BIAS STRING – Flat strings made with a special machine used to offer adjustable fit.                        
BIKINI – A brief two-piece swimsuit for women.                                
BLIND RUBBER – Rubber sewn on to the edge of a suit without the stitches shown on the outside.                      
BONING – A firm piece of plastic sewn into the garment to help maintain its shape. Usually used on the sides of the bust for support or alongside strapping spaces on bottoms.  Same as stays.    
BRA TOP – Referred to a classic style of top covering the bust with of over the shoulder straps.                      
CHEEKY – Bottoms not fully covering the cheeks of the butt.                              
CLEAVAGE – The hollow between a woman’s breasts when supported and exposed by a low-cut top.                      
COLOR BLOCK – A fashion term relating to an item with contrasting blocks or panels of solid color.                      
CRISS CROSS – Straight lines or paths that intersect each other.                            
CURVY – A woman’s figure when her waist is 10 or more inches smaller than bust and hips.                        
DEMI CUP – Is a underwire bra style top that is not full coverage on the top mound of the bust.                      
EASEE FIT – A UjENA name for garments not sewn with rubber or elastic.                            
FISHNET - Typically made from Polyester or Nylon. The fibers are woven to create a flexible, net-like fabric.  The spaces in the weave could be considered diamond shaped.        
FULL COVERAGE – A bottom covering all your butt without cheeks showing.                          
GAUZE – Cotton fabric that is light and airy with a slight crinkled texture.  Sometimes called baby muslin.                    
GLISSENETTE – A light weight shimmery semi-sheer mesh fabric.                            
HALTER – A top secured behind the neck and the back leaving the arms, shoulders and upper back bare.                      
HIGH CUT – A non-covered side of the hip above the leg.  Appears to make the legs look longer.                      
HIGH WAISTED – Bottoms rising at natural waist, at or just below belly button.                          
HOOKS – A solid accessory used to connect the back on a top.                            
LONG TRIANGLE – A top spanning higher than from side to side creating more of a halter style.                      
MESH – Typically made from Polyester or Nylon. The fibers are woven to create a flexible, net-like fabric.  The spaces in the weave could be considered honeycomb shaped.        
MIX AND MATCH – Used to describe shopping for any size separately from the top or the bottom and purchasing a top or bottom individually. UjENA has been Mixing and Matching sizes and fabrics for over 35 years.
NYLON – Durable synthetic thermoplastic polymer founded by Dupont.  Made into silky fabric that proved to be strong and fast drying. Usually blended with other fibers like Spandex, cotton, and wool.  
PEARLED EDGE – Special machine making a satin stitch along the edge of the fabric. Generally used to finish a hem or to create a ruffled edge.              
POLYESTER - Is a kind of plastic made into light weight fabrics. It is extremely popular because of its ability to be breathable and fast drying clothing.  It holds its shape and color after many washings.   
PUSH-UP PADS – A firmly shaped foam to fit under the bust in a hidden sewn in pocket to offer lift and shape. Usually are removable.                
REMOVABLE PADDING – Sometimes called shaping cups. A thinly molded cup in a hidden pocket of the bust of a swimsuit top to help shape and protect visual details like the areola.      
RIBBON – Wider strings used for tying for adjusted fit on a swimsuit.                            
RISE – Used to describe the bottoms measured from the crotch seam to the top of the front or back.                      
RUCHING – Is a gathering of fabric to offer a shapelier contour to the body. Usually by using elastic.                      
SCRUNCHIE – A circular band of fabric covered elastic used for fastening or gathering fabric to secure fit.                    
SCUBA FABRIC – A double knit fabric made from Polyester and Spandex. Very smooth texture with waterproof qualities. Good for diving suits and insulation for cold waters.        
SHEER – See through. If you can see light through the fabric it is sheer.                            
SHEER WHEN WET – Fabric that is see through only wen wet.                              
SHELF BRA - Is an independent lining built into the garment with a gathered lined elastic under the bust for support.                      
SHIRRED – Gathering of fabric by drawing elasticized threads in a parallel row.                          
SPAGHETTI - Is a term used for strings on a swimsuit that ties for adjusted fit.                          
SPANDEX – Lycra or elastane is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. Usually blended with other synthetic fibers like nylon or polyester.            
STAYS - A firm piece of plastic sewn into the garment to help maintain its shape. Usually used on the sides of the bust for support or alongside strapping spaces on bottoms.  Same as boning.    
STRAPPY – Eye catching straps highlighting a garment.                              
STRETCH GAUZE – A textured fabric that looks like cotton gauze, but is blended with a synthetic fiber to give it stretch.  This fabric is generally very soft and comfortable on the skin.      
SWIM DRESS – Is a swimsuit with the silhouette of a minidress.  It generally covers the upper thighs.                      
TANKINI – A two-piece bathing suit consisting of a tank top (covering bust to the waist) and a bikini bottom.                    
TRICOT – (tre-ko) French verb Tricoter, meaning to knit. A unique weave that is textured on one side and smooth on the other. Can be Nylon/Spandex or Polyester/Spandex        
UNDERWIRE – A firm framework to contour and support the bust. The metal or firm C shape frame is sewn into the top and not visible.
